Assuming that you are someone that is looking for a long term relationship – I have done a lot of research on some of the best questions to ask when going on a first date, mixed with some experience of my own, and decided to write about some of the top questions to ask on a first date.

Some of us have a good ability to keep a conversation going when interacting with people, and also the ability to strike up a good conversation. But on first dates, especially ones that are hooked up via an online dating site, sometimes we can get tongue tied and run out of things to talk about.

Not only that, you may also not be asking the right questions during the first date, should you find something out about your partner, or potential partner on the 3rd or 4th date that doesn’t fly with you what so ever.

Some good examples of these may be religion or politics, if this is one of the criteria that you want your potential partner to have the same beliefs as you do, it should be brought up in the conversation on the first date. Even if the two of you met on an online dating site, and their profile says what type of religion they are, still bring it up on the first date, should that be important to you.

So with that being said, what are some of the top questions you should ask on a first date?

1. Ask them what it is they are searching for in an ideal relationship. This will immediately let you know more about the person you are on the date with. Also be prepared to answer the question yourself should it get shot right back at you. 

2. Ask them what their dream job is. By doing this you will know what they want in life and what they expect to get out of it. This question can quickly determine what type of person they are and if they are going to truly be compatible with you.

3. Ask them, that if they could choose one person to talk to, any person, living or dead, who would it be?

4. Ask them if they do drugs, smoke, or drink, and if so how much. Though this will be revealed sooner or later, stuff like this really bothers some people. This may actually be one of those questions you should ask BEFORE the first date 

5. Ask them if they like roller coasters. Should the both of you agree on this, there is a good chance that you two both like excitement and thrills. Those that would disagree on this question, may find themselves bumping heads a lot down the road.

6. Ask them about their parents. Another question that can help you really get to know the person right off the bat. Knowing what kind of relationship someone has with their mother or father, if any at all, can tell a great deal about a person.

7. Ask them what their best friend(s) are like. Another way to get to know the personality of the person you are trying to get a feel for.

8. Ask them if they have ever traveled out of the country/state. Also if there was one place in the world they would like to visit/re-visit where would it be and why?

First date questions are all about getting to know the person without being too personal and nosy. Throughout my research of the best questions to ask on a first date, many suggested talking about past relationships and their exes.

From personal experience this has never worked and though it is not a definite first date killer, I would steer clear from this topic on the first date unless it is brought up by the other party, if so, keep it short and sweet and change the subject, just my opinion.
